Business Birthday Cards
Birthday card business is more of dealing with a sentiment of the client than business. The more you can attend to the pleasantries that strike a chord in the soft corner of the heart of the client, the more you are successful. The problem of the business is that the cards of birthday are expected to be tailor-made for each customer. The day, month, season and special reason to buy a card to convey a wish are to be taken care of in the business.
It depends upon the social custom, demographic character, standard of living, government policy on rate of birth etc. The last item, although seems bizarre, is a reality. For instance, if the policy of the government is to control population by restricting the rate of birth per couple to one child only, the less will be the inclination to convey the wish through a birthday card to the second child. If the birth rate control is regulated strictly, the second child birth may be treated an offence. Thus no birth day card for the second child. Since the card for the second child in such a situation may turn out to be an embarrassment.I shall be failing in my writing if I do not deliberate on the birth day wish that Lewis Carroll made to Gertrude Chataway in his letter written on October 13, 1875 from Christ Church, Oxford. Perhaps I need not say that Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of Mr. Dodgson, the author of Alice in Wonderland. A birth day wish with the intimation that the well-wisher intends to drink the health of the born may or may not elicit the kind of reaction apprehended by Mr. Dodgson from the person the wish is directed. Or it may not result in calling in the doctor for change of health.
What an extraordinary wish in a letter wishing many a happy return of the birthday. I think nobody will dare to print such a wish in the birthday card for fear of rejection of the same by the customer. If it is printed in a birthday card, there may be a need to introduce post-birthday card as well to convey the Boo! Hoo! Heres Mr./Mrs.... Has drunk my health, and I havent got any left! and The only way to cure me is to wait till your next birthday, and then for me to drink your health. Here in comes the sense of business since one birthday card may result in continuation of the same till return of the reply as intended in the message conveyed by Mr. Dodgson in his letter to Miss Gertrude.
This return wish may be called a wish to drink the health of the well-wisher. Similarly, on the birthday of the well-wisher a birthday card with the best of wishes for many a return of the day and drinking of his/her health will be a must as it was committed by the first well-wished when the latter was wished by the first well-wisher. And there will be a chain of wishes on the action to be taken next time. This will increase the card turn over and sale of birthday card and its resultant demand for the particular quote.
Birthday cards are often put on sale on behalf of the UNICEF signifying that a part of the proceeds will go to the welfare of the children worldwide. This acts as an appeal to the clients to buy the cards if they intend to mean welfare of the destitute children worldwide when they convey their wish to the dear ones on the occasion of their birthday. It is a good business sense to appeal to the humane quality of people and simultaneously to convey the social service motive of the birthday card business. Since the clientele of the birthday card never minds to pay some extra money to buy a card with such an appeal when they buy a card to convey a birth day wish for their near and dear ones, this strategy of selling Birthday cards with social service motive behind its printing and sale really works.
Thus a birthday card itself does not make a good business sense unless it is tinged with an extraordinary quote for message with the wish of many a happy return of the day to the born or the person to whom the wish is conveyed or unless the birthday card is made to convey not only the wish of the well-wisher to the born but also to show concern for the destitute children worldwide who are waiting for something which is intended to be provided with a part of the proceeds of the sale of the birthday card since they have nothing and none to fall back upon for their survival.
On Birthday cards are often printed the drawings and paintings of the children which act as very good media to express their thought shorn of any artificial impositions or adaptations. The children mostly draw or paint the objects they see around them or the subjects these objects stimulate them to think and link to their experience which finally helps mold their attitude towards the society and the world at large. Hence many birthday cards convey the attitude of the children if meaningfully cover-printed. These also do appeal to the clientele and increase its turn-over and sale and the yield.
Financing decision of the business of birth-day cards is special because of the human sentiments and appeal they may convey to the world at large in addition to what is printed inside to convey a wish to the born. In order to make the financing appealing the important aspects of the cards that are to be printed and discussed above needs to be taken into account and will be decisive to make it yield the desired result both in terms of earning and welfare of the children world over. The Birthday cards are catching more and more attention of the people all over the world because of the increase in the mobility of the people and also because they act as links between the well-wisher and the well-wished separated by a few hundred miles or continents.
