Antique surveying equipments

What is surveying•

Surveying is a technique of measuring the points of three-dimensional spaces and determining the distances and angles between them . Surveying equipments are the instruments that help in accomplishing different surveying processes . For completing the tasks of surveying, various scientific fields like trigonometry, mathematics, engineering, and physics are used . Surveying was extensively used in the field of construction and responsible for todays human developments. Today, surveying has extended its roots to various other fields like transport and mining.

Journey of Surveying Instruments

This process was carried out with the use of needle instruments in the ancient age . However, they were soon replaced with other equipments, as they were unable to point out north direction because of local interferences. Antique surveying equipments were usually made up of wood, brass and aluminum. Other equipments used for surveying included sextants, quadrants, and circumfertentors . The compasses made of brass or wood were used extensively for mining and other applications. Current meter, the gradiometer, heliostat and pedometer were some of the renowned antique surveying instruments . The current meters were used to measure the rate of water flow in the streams . Pedometer was an excellent instrument used for determining the distances by measuring speed .

List of Surveying Equipments

The most antique surveying equipments were exclusively made of wood. They had a great ability to resist water but designed in an unfinished way. As a result, they were replaced with the brass equipments. Brass equipments were not shiny in nature that resulted in giving strain during the work . To get away from this problem, the brass equipments were produced with dark finishes. This change not only helped to reduce the glare but also made the heating of the instrument easy . After the brass age, people have started using instruments made of ebony. Different instruments were used for calculating the horizontal as well as vertical angles . Alidade was one such instrument used for measuring horizontal and vertical angles along with the distances . Barometer is still a popular instrument used for measuring elevations and vertical distances .

Chronograph was used to measure time and altaazimuth for fixing positions at vertical and horizontal angles. The compasses were widely used for determining the direction that helped in carrying out various processes . Plain compasses, railroad, vernier, mining and solar compass some of the popular types of compasses that are still being used in different industries. Gradiometer is also used for measuring inclines and level lines of sight . Making a map for constructing building uses equipments like alidade, plum bob, quadrant, and plane table. Plum bob helps in determining alignments, and quadrant is used for determining angles between two objects . Everything is managed on the plane table, which has a drafting board over which the entire map is drawn with the help of all the above instruments .

There are number of other antique surveying equipments that were used for constructing buildings, locality and even the city structures. Today, these equipments are replaced by the modern surveying equipments to get higher precision and ease during the usage.
