Chemistry lab equipment
Chemistry is one of the major subjects in most of the science schools and colleges . A well equipped chemistry laboratory always welcomes aspiring students in the colleges, universities, laboratories and research centers. Clearly speaking, what does a well equipped chemistry laboratory really mean• It is not enough if the laboratory is spacious, with imported seated arrangements. What is really required are the lab equipments which are maintained in good condition. Hence most of the schools, colleges and the universities make it a point to see that their institution has a well organized chemistry laboratory with essential equipments. The chemistry lab equipments involve a wide range of meticulous apparatus that includes glassware, thermometers, distillation equipments etc.
The chemistry lab equipments are manufactured in such a way so as to produce the actual and precise results while carrying out any experiments. They are also created in such away that the user is at comfort and ease while handling various apparatus. Safety concern is also kept in mind while designing the chemistry lab equipments. This factor is taken in full consideration as the chemistry lab equipments have to be dealt near flames and burners during heating procedures. The other factor that should be kept in mind while manufacturing the chemistry lab equipments is the durable storage factor. The various bottles that are used in the chemistry laboratories are designed in such a way that solvents and solutes could be stored in them for lengthy time duration, without altering its chemical composition. These qualities of the chemistry lab equipments have given them an important place among the scientific apparatus which are used in different type of factories and research centers including schools, colleges, universities etc. Let us discuss some of the basic types of the chemistry lab equipments in detail with their uses and features:
Glass burette: This is one of the basic chemistry lab equipments which is cylindrical in shape and contains volumetric markings on its outer surface. The glass burette is usually made up of borosilicate glass . It consists of a stop cock at the lower end . This apparatus is of immense use as it helps to give out the required and precise quantity of liquid solutions in various experiments. Because of this quality of this chemistry lab equipment, precise measurements and results are obtained. However for best results it is better if the observer reads the markings on the burette to derive the accuracy of the experiment. The glass burette is hence one of the important chemistry lab equipments which is used in titration process. These days digital burettes have also replaced the traditional glass burette, which contain electronic dispensers thus making the job much easier for the observer.
Bunsen burner: This is an important chemistry lab equipment which helps the observer in heating various solutions. It is also used to sterilize glass tubes. The bunser burner is a vertical gas stove, which is well connected to a gas source. In a school or research laboratory, each platform usually consists of more than one Bunsen burner, and all are then serially connected to the main gas source, which is also quite economical for large scale use. The Bunsen flame can also be adjusted according to the amount of heat required to conduct the experiment. The bunser burner is a safe device, which contains gas consisting of methane or liquid petroleum gas derivatives such as butane and propane
Plastic funnel: This is also a very useful chemistry lab equipment. It is specially used to canal the liquid into beakers that have a narrow opening. The lower end of the funnel is a cylindrical small tube which can be placed on the narrow opening of the beaker or container. Other than plastic material, funnels are also made up of other materials such as stainless steel and paper funnels, which is disposable in nature. But among all, the plastic funnels are much in use and they are available in a number of sizes depending upon the apparatus used.
Spatula: This equipment is similar to the spoon in usage. In the chemical laboratories, this particular equipment is used to lift and spread various solutes. The edge of this particular equipment is wide and lean . Spatulas are available in various shapes and sizes depending upon the users choice . Depending upon them they are commonly named as micro spatulas, round edged spatulas, flat end spatulas etc. Spatulas are usually prepared out of stainless steel or plastic . But these days there are also prepared from silicone, rubber, wood and cast iron . The role of the spatulas is similar to that of a spoon we use in the kitchen .
Reagent bottles: These are one of the basic types of equipments that are used commonly in the chemistry laboratories. These bottles are wide mouthed with flat bottom and consist of glass stopper for storing various solvents. Reagent bottles are also available in various forms . Among these the glass reagent bottles and the plastic reagent bottles are the widely used ones .
Deflagration spoon: These are used to warm and burn different substances in the chemistry laboratory. The spoon is designed in such a way that it consists of a long handle, thus safeguarding the users hand from heat. The spoon is placed with a deep basin at the other end which helps to contain and hold various substances during the heating process.
Digital thermometers: These are instruments used to measure exact temperature in the chemistry laboratories . They are also used to measure varying temperatures which are required to start off various other chemical processes. The digital presentation of the temperature gradients is also helpful to the user thus providing faster and accurate temperature measurement.
