Doctorate business
The challenge before business schools today is to create a new cadre of management professionals who can understand the new dynamics of global business environment within a framework of business ethics and corporate governance and prepare managers with superqualification equivalent to doctorate in their streams.
It is with this view; the business schools are offering MBA programs with different areas of specializations. The MBA programs of Business schools are designed in such a way to provide contemporary knowledge and skills, both functional and integrative, in the field of management with the emphasis on leadership, entrepreneurship, ethics and governance.
When one thinks of a management course some popular specialization fields that come in ones mind are finance, marketing, human resources, operations and systems also called IT. But now there are many Business schools that offer some out of box learning like MBA in communication management, Forest management or give a new perspective to your family business.
Like if some one want to brush up his or her skills in communication management then best place to head to in India is Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad. The institute aims at imparting relevant education to students to enable them to become effective communications professionals. Here students get exposure to modernBusiness techniques and management processes. Here students study all general and specific aspects of language culture, media and communications, consumer behavior and marketing, advertising and marketing research and newly emerging marketing communications digital communications and branding broadcasting and design communications.
Another out of list management course is Rural Management. In this course students learn various subjects which include Agricultural science, Rural management, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, Ancient history, Anthropology, Archaeology, Architectural studies, Art history, Asian languages and culture, Asian studies, Australian studies, Chinese, Cognitive science, Communication and language, Criminology, Drama, Economics, English, English language, Environmental studies, European studies, Film and television, French, Geography, German, Governance and public policy, Greek, History, Indonesian, Industrial relations, International relations, Japanese, Journalism, Korean, Language, Latin, Linguistics, Literary studies, Mathematics, Media, Music, Peace and conflict, Philosophy, Planning, Political science, Psychology, Religion, Russian, Sociology, Spanish, Sports, Womens studies, Writing etc.
Another rare but interesting course in management is forest management. Forest management is the system, which creates understanding about forests and forestry as a sector, managing this sector and its natural resources and addressing the question of how you can provide livelihood to the nearly fifteen million people comprising forest dwellers or forest fringe dwellers and what can be done to enhance their livelihood. In the course institutes teach the way to go in a triangular direction that is an environmental component, a sociological component and an economic component is attached to Forest management. Students learn to take care of forests environment in terms of managing the resources. They also learn to undertake the development of the forest sector as an industry for economic activities and while making of all these taking care of sociological dimensions of the people dwelling there.
In todays scenario doing business has become increasingly complex. To begin with there is a lot of competition. The growth of Indian economy is largely driven by the infrastructure setup today. Its the core sector that is driving the economy. And this is going to be a lot more stable growth than growth led by certain other sectors and there is a good potential in different functions of the industry, entailing services of people from different functions of the industry, entailing services of people from different streams of technology, as also managers. We are globalized economy today. So much so that, a demand somewhere in China stands to affect us. So newer skills and perspectives are required.
In present curriculum B-Schools teach students various models to tackle any situation in the industry. In these institutes they learn to analyze and to prioritize. They develop observation skills, number comfort and the ability to manage ambiguity. During the recruitment of a management student by a company interviewer check all these fundamental abilities. While an individuals capacity is independent of a Business school and depends upon his willingness to learn and assimilate, there is found the difference between a well known and lesser known B-School is in terms of the confidence level of students of well known Business Schools.
But if we see the other side of the coin, students today are much savvier, much more aware of what is happening in the corporate world, and have a much better understanding of companies and ranks. They are more aware of their careers. They see every thing through carrier focus. Having said that, because of mushrooming of Business Schools in the country, there is unevenness. Actually there is nothing like Business-School Quality in present scenario. Also it is not simple to say that if you go to a better-knownBusiness school, students there are not better or vice-versa. In fact, some times in lesser known schools the desire of the students to do well is much stronger and therefore there is much greater intensity of involvement.
Business school product is not uniform in terms of carrier aspirations or way of working.Business schools are recruiting agencies. They go through a process of weed out and get a certain level of intelligence. Then they invest in certain skills. It is skills that students pick up at Business schools, rather than content. In fact any body can have only little faith that Business schools provide. MBA is not a content giving program. It gives little bit of awareness of most things but does not make students expert in anything. Most of business schools pay good money to attract excellent faculty because a lot of new schools are commercial enterprises. They attract faculty by providing a great working environment. Regarding credentials, these are established on the basis of inferences that come from students, the visibility of these students and how they are doing.
Here the problem is, if a new Business school is very selective in getting students then it does not become a viable enterprise, and if its not selective then its students will not do it proud. They will not help in building its brand. The innovation that a business school needs to make is in changing the rules of recruitment. Every one sees the recruitment through a CAT perspective. It has become a kind of template. There is need to change the template and get someone with right-brained aptitude and also get more complexity enabled managers. Rather than following the herd and getting the same kind of person, new management schools need to change the rules of the game in terms of what kind of person should become an MBA.
