San diego county district attorney

The District attorney represents the People of the State of California in criminal Court. The District attorney does not have authority to prosecute civil cases on behalf of individual citizens. The present District Attorney for San Diego County is Bonnie M.Dumanis. She took office in January 6, 2003. She has been elected November, 2002. Bonnie Dumanis is the first woman to serve as the District Attorney for San Diego County. She leads an office of more than 290 attorneys, 150 plus investigators and more than 600 support staff. Dumanis is committee to promotions based on merit and performance and has implemented an effective employee training and recognition program.

Jurisdiction

The san diego county district Attorney's office prosecutes felony crimes throughout San Diego County. The jurisdiction covers 42-hundred square miles. The District Attorney's office also prosecutes misdemeanor crimes in unincorporated areas of the County as well as all cities within the County other than the city of San Diego. The San Diego District Attorney's office is the second largest in the state of California and the sixth largest in the nation. Approximately three million people being served.

The District Attorney's office is responsible for prosecuting all felonies in the county of San Diego and all misdemeanor crimes in the county except the city of San Diego and city of Poway. Current the San Diego District Attorney's office has a 94 percent conviction rate.

The san diego county district attorney represents the people of the State of California in brining criminal charges arising out state law and county ordinances. California Constitution gave a mandate vide Article 11 and sections 1 and 4 states that the District Attorney is the public prosecutor. The public prosecutor shall attend the courts and within discretion, initiate and conduct on behalf of the people all prosecutions for public offenses. In other words, the District attorney has the responsibility and authority to investigate and prosecute all criminal acts committed within San Diego County in violation of state laws and county ordinances in the trial courts.

Besides, the district attorney also represents the people in the California appellate courts when appearing adverse trial court rulings and during pretrial writ proceedings. The District Attorney handle all appeals of misdemeanor convictions. With regard to felony defendants appeal and their convictions, the California attorney general steps into represent the people in the appellate courts.
