Bicycle motors

The bicycle motors are the motors that are used in bicycle to assist a person while pedaling. The bicycle motors are of different types and all these helps to carry the bicycle for distances. The bicycle motor can be an electric motor, which is used to move the bicycle, or it can be a motor with small internal combustion engine. These bicycle motors can easily take a person along and he does not have to pedal the bicycle. There are also some motors that require a person to do some pedaling on the way. Even there are some types of bicycle motors that run only when the person sitting on the bicycle pedals. As far as the using the names and the classification related to the bicycle motors is concerned, there are some regulations that are defined by the various regulatory authorities. DIFFERENT TYPES OF BICYCLE MOTORS AND POWER SOURCES

As said above also, there are many types of bicycle motors that are found in the market and each of these use different types of power source. Even there are hybrid types of bicycle motors that are found in the market. There are internal combustion bicycle motors and the electric bicycle motors that are usually available in the market. In the present times, the electric bicycle motors are gaining importance because of the fact that these have lighter batteries with more storage density. Most of people now prefer to go for electric motors rather than internal combustion motors. The bicycle motors are very much popular in that part of world where there is a strong bicycle culture like in different countries of Asia continent.

The power is supplied by the bicycle motors in number of ways. There are bicycle motors that supply the power to the front wheel while some supply power to the rear wheel. This depends upon the location of the hub in which the bicycle motor has been fitted. The rear wheel can easily be driven by way of bicycle motor fitted at the rear side and having a chain or the rubber belt. It is to be noted here that that power being supplied by the bicycle motor mounted on any of the wheels can also be supplied to the other wheel by way of bringing the powered roller, which has to be contacted with the tire. The chain of the bicycle can also be driven by a sprocket also.

Internal combustion bicycle motor is one of the different types of motors used to run the bicycle. This type of bicycle motor uses fuel in order to produce the power required to move the bicycle. This type of bicycle motor is behind used since 1900, when Singer Motor Wheel was made. Similarly, in the year 1914, Smith Motor wheel was developed. The largest IC powered motorized bicycle is the VeloSoleX.

The other type of bicycle motor found is the electric motor. As the name suggest too, this type of motor uses the electric current to move the bicycle. Based on different types of bicycle motors, there are many types of electric motorized bicycles that are found in the market. The electric motors vary in cost as well as complexity. In running the bicycle, the direct drive as well as geared motors, both are used to run the bicycle with electricity. When the electric motor is used in the bicycle, the electric assisting system can be attached to any pedal cycle. As far as the types of electric bicycle motors are concerned, there are chain drive as well as hub motors that are found. Both of these are quite common and produce less friction also while driving.

The electric bicycle motors are run by means of rechargeable batteries. These in turn move the bicycle. As far as charging these batteries are concerned, these are charged from the utility supply being provided at home. It is also called as mains. It is to be noted here that there are many features of electric bicycle motor that makes it more desired as compared to the internal combustion motor. There are options of using the electric motor for the regenerative braking or for charging. This can easily be done by way of pedaling or by rolling the bicycle downhill. Now a days, efforts are being made to recharge the batteries by way of solar panels or by way of fuel cells, so that continuous supply is being made to the electric motor and the bicycle can easily run for longer distances. Apart from the above, there are many technologies that are used now a day to run the electric motors used in the bicycles. Some of them are use of rare earth magnets, regenerative braking and the pulse width modulated control. The various types of batteries that are used to supply electric current to the electric bicycle motor are lead acid, Li-ion, Lithium ion polymer, Ni MH, NiCd etc. Most of the batteries that are being used today are lightweight but with more storage capacity. Of course, these batteries are quite costly.

One of the features of the electric bicycle motors is that a person can easily get the power when he actually requires. Thus, these motors are also called as power-on-demand motors. The motor is activated by means of a throttle, which is mounted on the handlebar. The activation can also be produced by way of pedelec, which allow a person to regulate the electric motor by way of pedaling. There are special mechanisms used in such cases like crank sensor or the torque sensor. The efficiency of the electric bicycle motor is dependent on many factors like strength of current provided by batteries.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT

As far as the environmental aspects are concerned, the two strokes or the internal combustion bicycle motors of course causes pollution. In many cases, this pollution is more than the pollution caused by the automobiles. This is because of the fact that partial combustion takes place. But when it comes to electric motors, they are absolutely zero emission motors and this is the reason why these motors are used quite much these days.

Bicycle motors are of course very helpful in riding the bicycle. There are different types of bicycle motors that are available in the market. While some of the bicycle motors requires a person to paddle in order to move the bicycle, some does not.
