Tuning a car engine is basically done periodically so that the car retains optimum level of performance.

Car Tuning involves basically setting the engine and its parameters like timing belt to original specifications and also setting the electrical and ignition system. Tune-up of a car means the normal, routine adjustments of the engine to meet the manufacturer\'s specifications. Tune-ups are carried out periodically. Sometimes it is recommended that they be carried out every 12 months or 19,000 km. Such tune ups help ensure that an automobile runs as expected. Modern vehicles now often run over 160,000 km (or 10 years) without requiring a tune-up. Technology has certainly gone very far!

The Spark Plugs must be the first to be attended to. Plugs can be unscrewed with the help of a Plug Spanner. They need to be cleaned and excessive carbon deposit removed. The sparks plugs are to be re-screwed but care should be taken not over tighten them. Ensure however that the spark plugs fit in tightly as loose plugs will loose compression and subsequent engine pick up will suffer. Spark plugs need to be kept dry and without any oil or grease.

The electrode gap (thats the air gap between the two electrode tips) should be checked before you fit them back. If necessary you can use a feeler gauge. Remember too small a gap or too big a gap will result in uneven spark that will affect the running of your engine. It is optimum to replace one spark plug at a time. Refit the HT Lead to each plug before getting on to the second plug. This will facilitate easy fitting as there would be no chance of your accidentally fitting the wrong leads to the plugs.

The distributor cap, rotor arm, points and condenser should also be examined and if the need arises then they can be replaced. It is best to replace them at regular intervals. Manufactures operational manuals can be help in this. The electrical points need to be adjusted before replacing. It is vital that this be done accurately. The points have a gap which can be measured and set with a feeler gauge. Using a Dwell meter is more accurate method to set the points. A Dwell meter measures the amount of time the points are open for and expresses the result as an angle. A dwell meter is really a part of a good multimeter. The red colored lead goes to the points side of the coil (negative terminal) and the black clamps onto any ground point on the engine. The engine is started till the correct gap is achieved. The only way to properly set up ignition points is with a dwell.The car engine while tuning need to be attended quite meticulously. In case you find your engine suddenly loses power then there is a good chance that your air filter is dirty or your tuned pipe is clogged. If this is the problem then you must clean your air filter. This can be done by making it relive with any air-filter lube . If your exhaust is clogged, youll have to remove the exhaust pipe and clean it. This is quite time consuming but essential.

A timing belt or timing chain links the crankshaft to the camshaft. This ensures that the e valves are in sync with the pistons. An important point to remember is that the camshaft is programmed to turn at one-half the rate of the crankshaft. High-performance engines can have four valves per cylinder. Thus adjusting a timing belt is of the utmost importance.Inspection of emission controls shows the health of the engine. Excessive co gas emission would point to an engine receiving a rich fuel and need to be adjusted.

The carburetor off the car is the heart of the engine. It regulates the quantity of fuel and air mixture going to the engine. Modern car carburetors do not require adjustments for up to 25000 km. But in case the performance of the car slips then cleaning its jets and setting the idling needle would be required.
