Rent motorhomes

You plan a trip with your family with the aim of exploring different areas without any fixed itinerary. You wish to avoid the usual tour groups organized by tourist firms. The best alternative is to cruise along in a motor home. This very versatile motorized vehicle provides you and your family with all the facilities and comforts that you have in your own home. However, buying a motor home outright is way beyond your budget. Don?t despair! You do have a great option: rent a motor home. Read on and know why you should and what the various aspects of renting a motor home are.

Reasons To Rent A Motor home

It is inexpensive.

It saves you the bother of entering and exiting a variety of accommodations on the way, not to mention the steep costs of staying and dining there.

It saves you the bother of maintenance costs that owners of motor homes have to consider.

It enables you to venture to places in other countries via motor home rentals there, rather than paying way too much for shipping your own wheels to that country.

It gives you a hands-on experience in the eventuality that you will buy your own when finances permit.

Checklist at the Rental Agency

SAFETY FIRST! Make a thorough check of the driving system of the motor home, especially the brakes and lights. Find out the exact locations of all power points and understand how to use the air conditioner, the heater, and hot water gadgets. Check that the gas cylinders are properly installed and the regulators properly attached.

It is highly advisable to take a driving lesson from the agency, whether or not you are driving a motor home for the first time. That way, you will understand better how everything works and won?t get some nasty surprises on your actual trip.

You absolutely must have a driving license, and some States require a special license specifically for driving a motor home. You will also need to give proof of your age. Some States (and abroad, too) you may need to undergo a medical test if you are in the senior age group.

Find out the location point where you need to pick up the motor home. If it is not within reasonable distance of your home, ask about transport facilities to that point.

Check the motor home thoroughly for water seepage.

If you wish to take along your kids bicycles, find out if there is sufficient storage space.

You would not like to leave your playful kitten with a neighbor when you are away, so ask if a pet can be taken along.

Confirm if your own insurance policy will cover you for a trip in a rental motor home. If not, ask the rental agency if they provide insurance cover. Also, find out if the insurance provides cover in the case of a collision.

In case the motor home stops working due to a mechanical failure or the generator or some other equipment stops functioning, how much will you be reimbursed?

Sign the rental agreement only after you have properly understood all the policies and read the add-ons at the bottom. Don?t sign if you have any doubts. Insist on a copy of the agreement after you have signed and keep this safely at home. Keep a second copy of the agreement with you and the contact numbers of the agency at all times during your trip. Make sure you note the name of the person you are dealing with (could be a junior staff member) and are aware of the agency?s owner?s name.

The Costs of Renting A Motor home

Let's assume you are renting a motor home to explore Alaska. A Class C motor home of about 22 feet that you rent for about 5 days could have you paying about $150 per day, but less than $140 per day if it is for more than 18 days. Deposit maybe about $500 (more if you are not a US resident). Mileage will be extra. If it is a motor home without a generator, you need to pay about $5 per day for a portable generator. If you want to watch your favorite TV programs, you can hire a TV/DVD player for about $5 per day. The housekeeping package for cutlery, toiletries, and other sundry items, the cost could be $15 per individual.

Note: The above is just an example, and does not necessarily reflect actual costs. Rates depend on the type and size of the motor home, the place you are visiting, and the agency.

Etc.

As you can see from the above example, in addition to the actual rental cost of the motor home, there may be a few additional charges. These may (but not necessarily be definite) include the following:

A deposit fee

Mileage fees

Taxes

Extra charges for linen or beds

A fee for the generator

A nominal fee for cleaning the motor home when you return from your trip

The cost of refueling when you return the motor home to the rental agency

A heavy penalty for canceling

Handy Trip Tips

Inform a few close relatives and friends where and for how long you will be away. Give them your mobile number as well as contact numbers of the rental agency. That way, in the unfortunate event that a thief breaks into your house when you are away, you can be contacted in some way. Also, there could be a worst-case scenario where you have got lost in a lonely and unknown terrain. When you don?t turn up on your planned return date, at least somebody will know roughly where you had ventured and send out search parties.

Look up the climatic conditions for the region you will be visiting.

It is better to make a reservation 2-3 weeks in advance of your trip, to avoid the disappointment of being told that a motor home is not available due to full bookings.

Renting a motor home during the peak months of spring and summer could cost you more.

Ask for discounts during off seasons and if renting more than one motor home for a large group even during the peak season.

Keep a detailed map with campsites in the area you are visiting clearly marked.

If possible, reserve a parking space at a campsite for your motor home in advance.

Take along a camping mat if there is limited space in the motor home and you cannot take along folding chairs.

If the motor home has an awning, learn how to roll and unroll it easily and quickly.

Make sure that the water tanks are full this is often overlooked, in the hurry to get on the road quickly!

Carry a first-aid kit, a compass and a couple of torches with extra batteries, soap bars, towels, mosquito repellents, and sunscreen lotions. If traveling in the winter season, make sure you have sufficient warm clothing.

Go Ahead! For that once-in-a-lifetime experience on the road, rent a motor home pronto. Do remember to be a safe and responsible driver, and stay within the speed limits
