Truck driving schools
Truck drivers play a very important role in being responsible in an indirect way for the economy of any country. They are responsible for the transport of goods that are of high value and meet the needs of the consumers. For such reasons there are a number of truck driving schools in the United States.
Once that a person has decided to get a CDL then the next important thing is to search for a good truck driving school. There are many truck driving schools that provide different programs. However, you should know which program is suitable for you and would give you the best training. When you join a truck driving school then you are giving out a lot of your time and money to attend these schools. So you should make sure that you verify the details of the school before you enroll.
Getting a CDL
CDL is the commercial Driver\'s license. This is almost the same in all the states. All the states require that when a person is studying to become a commercial diver he should get a state CDL permit. For this the candidate is required to qualify a written exam with the department of motor vehicles (or Driver\'s License Bureau--each state has its own name for the agency). These tests include a General Knowledge test, Air Brakes test and a Combination Vehicle test. It is usually seen that many drivers even take up tests for Hazardous Materials ("Hazmat"), Tankers and Double and Triple Trailers. When you get the permit then these are marked meaning that you are authorized to drive these vehicles also.
The main aim of the truck driving school is to train candidates so that they can pass the driving test conducted by the state. The candidate is required to show skills like testing the vehicle before driving, the basic parking skills, how to back and demonstrate an air brake test. Any good truck driving school would focus both on practical as well as written exam to get the CDL.
Types of truck driving schools
There are basically three types of truck driving schools:
Those that are run privately Public institutions Training programs conducted by motor carriers
Private institutions are owned and operated privately either in partnership or corporation. They aim at providing training to interested candidates in the truck driving skills. The advantage of taking the course with the privately run institutes is that they operate to train drivers for the trucking companies in America and they would be in business only if they provide this training successfully. However if you join a private institution then you should consider the fees that they charge.
Public institutions on the other hand operated and owned by the local or the state governments. Local community colleges state colleges and the vocational technical schools come under this category. Such colleges offer additional trainings like automotive technology, welding, accounting, computer training etc. in addition to the truck driving course. The advantage of taking the course from these institutions is that they are cost effective. The government subsidizes the courses by these institutions making them affordable.
The motor training carrier provides truck-driving training only for one specific reason that they aim at getting as many truck drivers as they can in a short period of time. They aim at their own profit and do not provide the best training.
State license and certification
Truck driving schools are usually licensed by the state. Any good school would not mind the candidate calling up and asking the agency about the license and the complaints registered against the school. The state license means that the school meets with the minimum criteria established by the state. This should not be confused with the certification. A certification means that the school means the trucking industry\'s training standard. A truck driving school is given a certificate after an independent third party has inspected it and determines that the school has the basic amenities to provide training for truck driving. Getting a certificate has become very important for the truck driving schools to survive. At present only the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI), located in Alexandria, Virginia is responsible to certify the truck driving schools.
Accreditation is another important thing that should be considered. However, there are very few schools that have been accredited because the standards are strict and it can be costly for the school. Accreditation is carried out by an agency that has been approved by the U.S. Department of Education for the approval of the schools.
