Vehicle tracking system
These are electronic devices that help to track the location of a vehicle. The vehicle tracking systems use GPS modules or automatic vehicle location in order to achieve accurate and easy location of the vehicle. The system also includes satellite transmitter to communicate the location of the vehicle to a remote person. The remote user can access the vehicle information on electronic maps using internet. The system is very inexpensive as the technology is available at no cost to the civilians.
Street eagle, track star and lo jack units are few companies that provide installation, hardware and mapping software of the system. The different technologies used by the system are radio frequency, satellite or public carrier like CDMA.the amount of information, frequency of updates and physicla environment of the device are few factors that detemine the type of technology used.
COMPONENTS OF VTSVTS
consists of three subsystems
1) In-vehicle unit
2) Base station
3) Communication link
The in-vehicle unit has a position sensor, intelligent controller and an interface to the communication link. The sensor sends position information to the intelligent controller. The controller converts the received information and sends the same to the central station.
The base station includes application software that will receive the position information and display the same on a digital or geographical map. The data link and communication protocol has to be carefully selected based on the required bandwidth, number of vehicles to be tracked, coverage area, expandability etc.
TYPES OF VTS
The vehicle tracking system is typically classified into passive and active systems.passive systems store speed, GPS location, trigger events and other vehicle informtion.the stored data can be downloaded to a compputer once the vehicle returns to a pre-determined state.Active system acquires and directly transmits the data via cellular or satellite transmitters to a data center or computer system for further evaluation. The tracking systems are commonly used in taxis to service customers in a better way.
USES AND APPLICATIONS OF VTS
1) VTS is used for theft prevention and stolen vehicle recovery. The police cruisers can easily locate the stolen vehicle with the help of the signal emitted by the system. VTS is used by fleet operators for routing, dispatch, on-board information and security.
2) The usage of VTS enables the fleet operators to reduce increasing fleet expenses, improve fleet efficiency, reduce vehicle-operating cost and reduce time spent at unfamiliar locations.
3) Companies further use the VTS in asset tracking and field service management. Many companies are involved in providing repair, maintenance, delivery and service functions. Such companies can easily locate and dispatch the nearest field person/worker to meet the customer needs
.4) The tracking system is also used by sales professionals to easily locate themselves in unfamiliar areas and obtain driving directions. This helps to reduce driving time and hence improve productivity.
5) The VTS is predominantly used in shipping industry. In fact the VTS was used only in shipping and transport companies in the past. However the usage of VTS has improved significantly as the technology is readily available.
