Easter story

Easter is an important festival for Christians. It denotes the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of god, who was born in this world to save sinners. He became a symbol of sacrifice. Besides Easter, there is yet another festival for Christians called as Christmas. This denotes the birth of Jesus Christ.

Story of Jesus

Jesus, the son of god was born in this world. His birth was a mystery to this world as God himself was born in the world as a common man. Jesus was born to Joseph and Mary. He was born with the power of Holy Spirit sent by God. Jesus was born in a small town of Bethlehem in a manger. After the birth of Jesus, many shepherds came to see him. Three wise men from the East too came to visit Jesus. They presented valuable gifts like Gold, Camphor and Myrrh to Jesus.

Jesus lived in a small town of Nazareth, in Galilee. Hence he was known as Jesus of Nazareth or Galilean. He lived a very simple life. Till he attained the age of thirty, he did not start his ministry. He first started his miracle at a marriage in Cana, turning water into wine. Though this was his first miracle, Jesus did not disclose this to many people since his time of ministry had not arrived. Before he started his ministry he took Baptism from John who was a Baptizer. John was a person living in the wilderness, eating locusts and honey. He was the son of Elizabeth, in other words he was the cousin of Jesus.

Jesus, during his ministry performed many miracles. He gave sight to the blind, made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. He made many bedridden people to rise up and walk. Many who touched his garments were also healed. He gave life to some dead people. One of the people whom Jesus raised from the dead was Lazarus, brother of Mary. His glory was spreading all over the world. Many people from around the world came to hear his sermons.

The doctrines of Jesus were very simple and easy to understand. His doctrines insisted more about divinity and love. He asked men to love one another. He insisted on the commandment, Love your neighbor as you love thyself. This was one of his greatest teachings.

Easter is remembered for the resurrection of Jesus Christ who died on the cross and rose again on the third day. Jesus, son of God was born in this world as Savior of mankind. He did many miracles; many blind could see, lame could walk, lepers were healed. He came to this world to fulfill the desire of his heavenly father. He came to this world to spread the gospel. He was persecuted, died on the cross, and rose again on the third day. The day when Jesus rose from the dead is known as Easter. On the occasion of Easter, Christians all round the world celebrate Easter as a very happy occasion.

Though Jesus was preaching the Gospel and spreading the good word, the Higher Priests thought he was blaspheming against God. Hence they plotted to kill Jesus. As a first step to kill Jesus, they choose Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples of Jesus to betray Jesus. Those high priests bribed Judas with thirty silver coins to betray Jesus. On the day Jesus was betrayed, he sat along with his disciples for his last supper. During this supper he broke bread with his hands and said this is my flesh which is given unto you. After eating bread he took wine in his hands and said drink, this is my blood, shed for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

After the supper Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane, and prayed to God, his heavenly father, to remove the cup if it is his will. At the same time he told his disciples to pray without ceasing, as the time had come where the son of God was going to be betrayed. As he was praying, the soldiers of the Roman Empire came along with Judas Iscariot to arrest Jesus and took him for the trial.

Pontius Pilate, who was the governor of Roman Empire, found that Jesus was not guilty. He wished to release Jesus but the people, including religious elders and chief priests shouted with great noise that Jesus should be crucified.

Since Pontius Pilate could not do anything against public opinion, he said let this blame not come upon me and my children. He handed over Jesus to religious leaders for Crucification. Roman soldiers took Jesus, stripped him and made him wear a scarlet gown. They made a wreath out of thorns and placed it on his head as a crown and they also placed a tall slender grass in his right hand and started mocking Jesus. After stripping him once again, they made Jesus wear his own clothes and took him for Crucification.

Jesus was taken to the mount named Golgotha with a wooden cross borne on his back. The word Golgotha means A Skull. He was beaten up with a whip. His back looked as if it was ploughed. After reaching the mount Golgotha, Jesus was nailed to the cross. When a person is nailed to a cross, both his legs and hands are stretched and nailed. The air to the lungs are blocked, hence the person who is crucified will die after a few hours. This type of punishment was given to notorious people by the Romans. Jesus suffered such a notorious punishment for the sake of sinners.

After Jesus was crucified, he died after three hours. There was complete darkness in the world for many hours at the time of his death. There was even a sign of a tremor. Jesus died with a great shout saying, My God! My God! Why hast thou forsaken me These were the last words spoken by him. Later he was buried in a tomb.

Early in the morning, on the third day, Mary Magdalene and Mary of Jesus came to the Tomb. As they reached the tomb they saw that the stone had rolled down. Initially they thought that someone had stolen the body of Jesus. At that time an Angel appeared to them and said, He has risen; he is not there. Immediately both went and told others about this. Later on Jesus appeared to his disciples and others. The day he rose from the dead is called as Easter. Easter is considered to be a very special occasion because it symbolizes Gods victory over death and sin. Hence this festival is a very important one to all Christians.
