The pearl bearing mollusk, which is found in the clear waters of the ocean, is the main causator for the formation of the pearl. When a grain of sand or any foreign particle enters the body of the pearl bearing mollusk, a defense mechanism sets in and the mollusk secretes a substance called nacre generally called as the mother of pearl, that gradually accumulates around the e foreign particle and coats until the particle looses its original identity and gradually becomes smooth, thick and round in shape.
