What is white Gold:

So the amount of gold is the same but the other metals in alloy are different. White gold can be 18 carat, 14 carat, 9 carat or any carat below 21.
Nickel was used traditionally in white gold but it is no longer used in most white gold made today as it can cause skin allergies in some people. New white gold jewellery rings are normally coated with another white metal called Rhodium. Rhodium is a metal very similar to platinum and it shares many of the properties of platinum including its white color. The true color of white gold is light gray but the rhodium plating makes it look white. The Rhodium is very white and very hard but it does wear away eventually. To keep white gold jewelry look at its best it should be re-rhodium plated approximately each 12 to 18 months. Most local jewelers are able to rhodium plate jewelry for a cost effective price.
As palladium white gold is more expensive, there is a demand for cheaper alternatives that are nickel-free. Many new, patented alloys are coming to market, most of which rely on manganese additions as the main whitener. Some are palladium-free and others are low palladium alloys. They tend to be hard and more difficult to process. Many of these alloys are not a good white color and require rhodium plating. They may suffer cracking and tarnishing problems too. Gold and palladium are totally soluble in each other. Palladium white gold is softer and more ductile compared to nickel white gold. In both cases it is not possible to have white gold with purity greater than 21 carat. The key properties of alloying gold with palladium are-

* Turns yellow gold white (depending on the amount added)
