Black tahitian pearl necklace

Popularly known as "Queen of Pearls", Black Tahitian Pearls are mainly grown in the clear warm waters of French Polynesia, inside the large black lip oysters named Pinctada Margaritifera.Absolutely stunning and gorgeous in appearance, Tahitian pearls are considered to be rarer than other types of pearls because very few oysters survive to produce the fine pearl. They are the only pearls to acquire black body colour naturally.

These pearls are traditionally called "black," but their color can range from metallic silver, to the color of graphite. And within this range of colors they have bluish, purplish, or greenish overtones. Some pearls are even bi-color. Till a few years ago women preferred to go for black pearls but these days lighter shades are also preferred for their elegant and exquisite look.

Each pearl in this variety is unique and will not resemble another. This is the reason why it is very difficult and expensive to acquire a single strand necklace made of black Tahitian pearls. Tahitian pearls grow 2 to 3 years in salt water and average around 13 mm in size. Tahitian pearls over 14 - 15mm in size are considered to be very big and very rare and therefore very expensive too.

It is said that a Roman General named Vitellius financed an entire war by just selling one of his mother\'s pearl earrings. The legendary beauty Cleopatra is said to have professed her undying love for Marc Antony by drinking a glass of wine in which a pearl was dissolved.

Black Tahitian pearls come in different shapes. The shape is determined by time factor of how long the pearls remain underwater inside the oyster. Round and semi round pearls are rare and expensive. Drop and button shaped pearls are used to make interesting jewellery designs. It is perfectly natural for these pearls to have imperfections or flaws on their surface and in fact some time help in identifying genuine ones from fake ones.

Black Tahitian Pearls are considered as the Diamonds of the Pearl Kingdom. They are extremely elegant and can be worn with any outfit, be it traditional or modern. They can be worn as single strand necklaces or multi strands.

Short length necklaces add that classic look to festive occasions; where as a single long strand gives a chic look to any outfit including western wear like pants and suits.

A single black pearl set in diamonds can also serve as a pendant on a thin gold chain giving a rich look to any dress that you team it up with.

Preserving Pearl Necklaces

Dirt and oil from your skin can corrode the nacre. To prevent this, wipe pearls with a damp cloth often. Do not store them with diamonds or other metallic jewellery. Always store them in a soft cotton pouch. Do not keep pearls in an airtight container. Pearls will crack if there is insufficient moisture. Always include a damp cloth when storing your black pearl jewelry. Use only mild soap or acetone. Never use jewelry cleaner with ammonia or vinegar. Always wear these necklaces after you finish applying make up or perfume, since the chemicals in these products could harm the pearls. Do not wear black pearls when the string is wet- this will attract dirt that is difficult to remove. If they are worn regularly, restring black Tahitian pearl necklaces at least once a year

Black Tahitian pearl necklaces compliment any skin complexion, any occasion, and any outfit.
