Canadian student loan

The Canada Student Loan Program is an education loan which provides to the candidates of College, University, Vocational School and Trade School. This loan or grant is given to meet the need of financing problem of education. The government gives the opportunity to the candidates to develop their skill and knowledge and other allied facilities through this program.

The Canada Student Loan Program (CSLP) was created in 1964. In the first stage i.e. between 1964 and 1965 the loans were provide to the post-secondary students by the financial institutions. In 1995 some several charges took place in Canada Student Loan. The Canada Student Financial Association Act was passed in the place of Canada Student Loan Act.

Apply for Canada Student Loan

The permanent residents of Canada and refugees are eligible for loan which is provided by federal government. The scheme through which the loan provides is the Canada Student Loan Program (CSLP). Firstly, the students have to determine the eligibility for the Canada Student Loan such that they can able to apply for the loan. In this case the complete student profile may be needed. The student profile includes the province or territory, whether you are a full-time or part-time student, which type of institute you have attend. After fulfillment of required information, if the candidates are able to eligible for the loan, they are informed about educational institute from where they can receive the student loan.

The interest free loans are provided to full-time student and this interest is paid by the government during the interest free period. The repayment of student loan is being after 6 months from which the interest is added to the loan amount nut in most cases the loans are pay off within 10 years after completion of study.

On the other hand the part-time students are not allowed to provide the provincial student loans. During their study they pay the interest and pay principal with interest, when they are not a part-time student.

For full-time student the Canada Student Loan (CSL) is up to $210 per week or 60% of students assessed need (the lower of these two) can be issued per loan year (1st August to 31st July).

There is a huge change in 1995 and 2000 in provincial programs. Due to these changes the students who are in school before and after this period (1995-2000), find that there are 6 different loans to manage.

The Canada Student Loan is administered by National Student Loan Service Centre. Student can repayment loan by opting a fixed rate of interest i.e. prime interest rate +5% or a floating rate of interest i.e. prime interest rate +2.5%.

Debt Reduction in Repayment

The student may able to get the facility of Debt Reduction in Repayment (DRR). When the students have the long-term financial difficulty the Debt Reduction in Repayment system assists to repayment of loan. DRR can reduce the outstanding loan. It also helps to maintain the lower monthly loan payment system.

Professional programs

There are many programs for students which provide more funds in terms of credit. These programs includes in professional programs, which specified by most charter banks in Canada. Sometimes the loan provides with lower interest rates. Sometimes students may also eligible to get the government loan which are interest free, in many cases. But the private loans are not count as government loans.
