Is there any way to ensure only articles that are accessible to the users login level are show?

So before a user logins in they would see only articles published to 'Public', after logging in would see those as well as for 'registered'.

Module owrks well, but if the article happens to be for registered users only its a shame to show to a guest the link in the first place.

At the moment, this is not catered for. However as a workaround, you can try the following:
Create two copies of the Featured Articles module, the first is visible only when a user is a guest, the 2nd visible only when a user has registered and logged in. Then in each module, put the relevant articles, i.e. the registered only articles in the registered only modules, and guest only module, guest only articles.

In the meantime, we'll test and try to implement your requested functionality.
