I\'ve been swearing and Googling for days now trying to figure out why I kept getting 403 errors.

This also fixed the spell checker error with the TinyMCE editors which also returned 403 errors.

Another idea...and danger

Please note: The recommended fix does open security vulnerabilities. Even if it solves the 403 issue, the best practice would be to comment it in and out as you need to upload things. Sorry. I know...damned if you do or don\'t.

However, for what it\'s worth, the problem might be caused by a conflict with one or more extensions---so you might find a safer resolution by examining what you\'ve installed.

In my case, uninstalling JCE editor and utilities plugins did the trick. I don\'t know why, since many people seem to very happy with JCE, but my J1.5 install choked on it. Anyway, I guess I can live with the default editor if it means I can upload images.

Diorist,

what kind of security issues are introduced with the above edit?

What did I do wrong?

I added this bit to htacess a text file, (I find no other) but am still having a problem uploading.

I\'m getting an \"upload failed 406\" error message. Progress bar shows green initially then halfway through is orange. Yes. All the permissions on folders are writable. Version 1.5.7

The ftp username and pw used in the media manager are correct.

What I don\'t understand is it uploads fine one day (no extensions added or other changes are made) and the next day it stops. This seems to be a common pattern other things I\'ve read.

Yea! I can get some sleep for the first time in 2 days.

I found the real htaccess file and added this snippet. Worked instantly.

THANK YOU!

A more subtle fix?

The fix given here, as Diorist states, relaxes the security settings, thus increasing the vulnrability of your site.

The component being disabled is mod_security. Does anyone know how the rules in mod_security could be selectively relaxed without disabling it completely?

PS: I believe that FCKEditor is the conflicting app in our case. Do the FCK team know about this Joomla! issue?
