#38 - Moving Joomla from subfolder to the root

Another question which pops up a million times of the Joomla forums, is how to move your website from www.yourdomain.com/joomla to www.yourdomain.com. This is actually not too difficult to do, so here goes.

Basically the first thing you need to do is copy all the file structure from the /joomla directory to the webroot,

typically public_html directory. Using FileZilla (ftp software, move the /joomla to its parent folder. You can simply select all files and folders and Joomla and drag and drop them to the .. folder (parent). This will move them to the root folder. Another procedure is to move them to the local drive, and upload back to the root file.

1. Using ftp software download a copy of everything from the /joomla subdirectory to your local hard drive
2. ftp a copy of all of that from your local drive back out to the root web directory

Once you have copied all the files, you will need to make a couple of changes to the configuration.php file. Again, using FTP software, edit the configuration.php file and remove the reference to the /joomla subdirectory from the $log_path and $tmp_path.

Once the configuration changes have been done, you can access your website at www.yourdomain.com

works but none of the links work as it comes up with a 500 error. Do you know
were I may have gone wrong?

Thanks Daniel

I believe your database may need to be updated as it has hard paths to
http://site/subfolder instead of http://site/

I am a novice on Joomla and i have read a lot about moving Joomla from
www.domain.com/cms to www.domain.com
It is important for SEO to do this
correctly.
Not been a programmer I was scared to make amendments to files, so i
discovered a much easier solution. A little timely but it invloves no amendments
to files and it works perfectly. Actually so well i decide to write here about
to help others out there with the same problem.
The answer is to use
JoomlaPack.net
Basically with Joomlapacka (a Joomla component) do a back up.
Load back up in any folder/root or even new domain and it reinstalls Joomla for
you doing all the necessary amendments. AMAZING. I had my joomla site at
www.salemi.co.uk/cms and moved it www.salemi.co.uk in 30 minutes, (with a slow
internet connection)
Follow these instructions:
1. Download the relevant version
of Joomlapack zip file at http://www.joomlapack.net/download/JoomlaPack-Comp
