Joomla 1.5 Featured Articles Module

Ever wanted to draw attention to a few particular articles in your joomla website? This simple module allows you to do just that. You just specify the content IDs of the articles you want to feature, and they will their title will get displayed in a simple module. Now also supports Joomla 1.5 natively!

The idea behind this module is that you might have written a few articles which you like particularly and want to display on the frontpage or in some particular menu link. You could create a new menu to display them and choose the items you like, or you could use this simple module. Just install using the standard module installation. Then you have the following parameters:

  • Content Item IDs - the content item IDs of the articles you want to feature. These must be enclosed in brackets (), and if there is more than one they must be separated by a comma e.g. (1,2,3)

Pro Edition - Download (€3.00)

Please Register and Login to download.

If you like it, please take a moment to write a small review on the Joomla Extensions site, vote for us, or link to us! Smile The price is obviously dirt cheap to make it affordable to all, whilst at the same time helping to support further development of this and other modules.

Standard Edition - Download (Free)

Please Register and Login to download.

If you like it, please take a moment to write a small review on the Joomla Extensions site, vote for us, or link to us! Smile

The module should be fairly easy to use, however if you find any problem while use it, please drop a line in the comments below or contact, and we try our best to support you. If you like it and used it, please do leave a comment with a link to your site, it would be good to know that other people have found it useful. We consider this to be just a drop in the open-source ocean.

If you'd like to see it in action, just take a look to the left (Featured Articles).

Compatibility

The current version supports Joomla 1.5 natively, with various layouts. Other versions exists for Joomla 1.0

Installation

To install the module, simple go to Extensions > Install / Uninstall, Browse for the file and click Upload and Install.

Configuration

Configuration of the module is done via Extensions > Module Manager. Click on the Joomla Featured Articles item, and you will see a screenshot similar to the one below:

Featured articles module parameters

You then need to find the content item ids of the articles you want to display. This is done by going to Content > Article Manager, click on the first article you want to display and in the Publishing parameters in the right you will find the content item id as shown in the figure below. The content item id is 19 in the example below.

Content ID

Find the content items of all the articles you want to feature and then in the Content Item Id parameter of the module, enter all the item ids. If you want to feature articles with content items ids 37, 25, 38 and 50, the Content Item Id parameter of the module will be (37,25,38,50) as shown in the screenshot above. This parameter is required, and unless the format is  (37,25,38,50) with your content ids instead of the numbers, the module will not work.

The rest of parameters are:

  • Ordering - determines the way the items are ordered when shown
  • Layout (Default / Table)
  1. Default is a bullet style created by using DIVs, ULs and LIs
  2. Table - creates a table with the items
You need to experiement to see which layout fits best with your site. You can also create your own template, make a copy of the default.php and name it custom.php. Style it as you require, by making the appropriate changes to the HTML without touching any of the php. Once you save the custom.php you can choose it from withing the Module Parameters.
  • Module class suffix - this allows you to create individual CSS styling as per normal Joomla styling

Then give the module a position, publish it and you're up and running.

    Support

Please post to the forums of you need help in configuring the module.

    CSS Styling Service

A lot of people have been having problems styling the module. The module supports any styling you require, though it seems that most people have trouble configuring the styles. Most requests have been for helping to style the modules to the look and feel of a particular website. For those who don't understand the way CSS works, or want a quick touch up of the module to suit your site's style, I'm offering a special service, priced at €10 to customize the module. I have helped numerous people in the past, unfortunately, time has become so limited that I need to start asking for a small fee for this service. If you are interested please contact us.

    Thanks...very handy module.

Is there a limit to the number of articles which
can be featured? I have 5 listed in the parameters but only the first three are
    being displayed.

    DART  - No limit on articles   |Registered |2008-07-25 05:54:52
Hi Glenn. There is no limit on the articles you can display as you can see on
the demos. Check whether the articles you have are published or not.
    gamenzie  - Missing articles   |Registered |2008-07-25 19:14:19
They're published, but they are both 'uncategorized' articles, previously linked
    only from a menu.

Is there something in the module that excludes
    non-categorized content?

    Thanks.

Indemnis  - Problems with changing the ord   |Registered |2008-08-15 08:14:04
    Hi,
First of all this is a great module.

But i have a problem with ordering and
changing the entries i put in the proposed field.

    Yesterday i put 2 content
item ids in the proposed field ... so far everything worked without problems...
the 2 entries were shown on the frontpage.... now i tried to change the order
but no matter which option i chose nothing changed...

    Well... as far as there
are only two entries its not such a big problem.

Today i wanted to add a third
content item id ... so far so good... i saved the changes and switched to the
frontpage and reloaded it... nothing happend... back to the backend the 3 ids
were in the proposed field... so the changes were saved, but not stored on the
    mainpage.

Is there anything i didnt consider?
    Please help me
stmatth  - Previous and next links possib   |130.232.79.xxx |2008-08-28 07:43:53
HI, I'm wondering if it is possible to have "previous article" and
"next article" links? Let me explain: I'd like to make a "highlights
tour" of my site, where visitors can easily go to the next featured article.

So I'd like to be able to include something like: "This article is part of
the highlights tour. Go to ->next ->previous ->start of tour", and of course
next and previous determined automatically through the article list.
    DART  - Previous / Next   |SAdministrator |2008-09-11 05:52:58
This functionality is not available, however I think we could create a nice
module like you are suggesting. I suggest you post a Feature Request in the
    forums for this.

I downloaded the 1.5 module, installed (via joomla uploader) & configured as per
    your web instruction.

    Great job.

I want all article show. How can I do it???
    DART  - all articles   |SAdministrator |2008-10-18 05:03:51
    Rm4,

this is currently not a feature of the module. You would have to enter the
    content id of each article.
    ajshades  - current style   |Registered |2008-11-01 21:10:47
I want to edit the css to show the current article page you are on but the
current build does not accept this. It only allows the use of - Module class
    suffix.

How can I edit the php to show the current article page you are on? (by
a different color, bolding the link etc)
    DART  - Use ItemId   |SAdministrator |2008-11-02 14:16:10
I believe that you can edit the code of the module to change the CSS based on
the current ItemId. Its not very flexible, but it may achieve what you would
    like to get...
    ajshades  - current style   |Registered |2008-11-02 19:21:30
Maybe I didn't explain well enough.

By default the joomla menu system includes
a current style so when you click on a navigation item and are on that page it
changes that menu item to be the current style: ' id="active_menu-nav"
    '

Even if you click on a link through your module each menu item looks like :
    '< li class="featuredarticles_menu">
    '.

Is there anyway to edit the php
to include a current or active style?
    DART  - current style   |SAdministrator |2008-11-03 06:46:42
Hi, I've included the item in the Feature Requests, and will try to include this
(if possible) in the next round of development

I am trying to use Joomla! native search-engine-friendly URLs, and I can't
figure out how to make the Featured Articles mod work with it --
instead of the correct URL, it tries to go to
    [sitename]/features/[itemID].html.

How do I get it to point to the correct
URL, so that it will work?

(I am using Joomla! 1.5.9, and this is the
native SEO component, not a third-party mod. I have gotten it to work with
everything else except featured articles, so I would really like to get this fixed. It's a great
    mod otherwise.]
    DART  - SEO   |Administrator |2009-01-22 05:12:13
Originally, the mod has been tested such that it works correctly with Joomla 1.5
and SEO enabled. We'll just take another look and retest to make sure that it
still works correctly and then advise. Unfortunately, there is no particular
date set for this since we are quite busy at the moment!
    argent310   |76.170.204.xxx |2009-01-22 21:13:32
On a hunch, I tried uninstalling the module completely and reinstalling it, and
    this time it worked.

The messages you are seeing are only warnings and can safely be ignored. You
need to set a setting in your php to disable php warnings and they will not show
    up anymore.

    Hi there,

I installed the component, added the ID to my article and enable it.
Injected this into the breadcrumb on my home page. This is the error I am

    Any
    ideas??

    Thanks!!
    DART   |Administrator |2009-10-27 07:13:34
There are two ways this might occur:

    1. Incorrect format of article Ids
    (11,2,3) including brackets.

    2. Unpublished categories / sections / articles.
