#40 - Keep your Joomla updated

We've said this over and over again. Keep your Joomla installation updated to the latest stable version. ALWAYS! No ifs, buts, or maybes. No excuses should have you delaying your upgrade to the latest Joomla stable version. Never ever! Have we made a strong enough point?

Why do we say this? Each Joomla stable release, fixes a number of bugs, and usually plugs any small or large vulnerability which there might be in the latest version. Following the recent (Aug '08) discovey 1.5 vulnerability in Joomla, the Joomla team made an astounding job of releasing a stable version within less than 3 hours that the vulnerability was reported and confirmed. That is a superb job by anyone's standard. Yes we can moan and groan that the vulnerability shouldn't be there in the first place. But how much have you ever paid to the Joomla team for the services they give? We think they are allowed the occasional slip up.

Anyone who upgraded immediately, saved themselves the hassle of having to recover a hacked website. So do yourself a favour, if you have a Joomla website, make sure that you subscribe to the Joomla Announcements, and make sure that each time a stable version is issued, you upgrade IMMEDIATELY.
