#5 - Changing the default frontpage

Another easy to do but often asked question about Joomla is how to change the default homepage from the frontpage component to another page.

Joomla 1.0

The page which is displayed when you first hit a Joomla website is the first menu item in the main menu. Therefore, if you want to change the default frontpage, go to the main menu (Menu > mainmenu) and change the ordering of the menu items such that the page you want to display first is at the top of the list.

Joomla 1.5

In Joomla 1.5, this has become easier to handle. You just go to the main menu
where your homepage is, select the menu item, and mark it as default. You'll notice that the menu which is default is marked with a start next to it. You'll also notice that in the Menus module, there is an asterisk in the menu which contains the default frontpage.

The images above show the default icons which are used to set a menu item as the default frontpage.

Ralph  - change default page   |76.103.67.xxx |2008-12-23 16:28:16
For those of us who created a page in HTML (outside the Joomla CMS) and placed
it in the root directly, how do I get it to display?

In my case, lets call the
page home.html. I have tried several menu options to point to the home.html
page, with negative results. I can't use the article menu, as home.html does not
exist in the DB. Is there a way to create a menu item that points to a handmade
HTML page?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Ralph

Use a menu link which links to a URL and put the address of the page e.g.
www.yourdomain.com/home.html

Dart,

Could you be a bit more specific on that last answer? I inherited a
website with an html frontpage, and I can't figure out how the last person
linked it to make it the front page. Which menu would contain the link?
Mainmenu? I don't see it...

Thanks in advance.

Roberta,

typically its the mainmenu which contains the default link, though it
may be in other menus.

It can be easily identified because in Joomla 1.5 it has
a star right next to it.
Seth Fraser  - No Default option?     |97.122.178.xxx |2009-02-13 17:20:32
Has anyone come across a situation where the default option isn't displayed? I'm
using Jooomla 1.5.9 and in the process of setting up a few things I deleted a
few articles from the front page manager....

Bad move, apparently, because
those were sitting in the Main Menu and were the Default.

Now I am trying to
set anything else to default but the button simply isn't there - has anyone else
seen this behaviour?

Thanks in advance.
