#4 - Customising the Joomla Frontpage

Audience: Joomla Newbies

This simple question is asked over and over again on the Joomla forums by newbies. The most popular question would be, how do I change from two columns to one column display.

Understanding the FrontPage component

The Joomla frontpage is a component which allows you to control how your homepage looks. It is slightly different from standard components in the fact that its configuration is not done via the Components menu. Instead you need to find the Home link in your main menu. In a default installation the Home points to the frontpage component.

To customise the look and feel of the frontpage you need to edit the Parameters of the Home menu item link. Therefore go to Menu > mainmenu > and click on the Home link.

Joomla frontpage parameters

#Leading - This parameter determines the number of full width articles to display. Articles displayed in the Leading will have the Intro text displayed. This setting overrides the columns parameter i.e. if you have decided to have 2 columns and 1 items in the leading intro you will have a layout as follows:

Article 1 - Full Width (Row 1 - Leading)

Article 2 (Row 2, Column 1)       Article 3 (Row2, Column 2)

Article 4 (Row 3, Colum 1)         Article 5 (Row 3, Column 2)

Columns - the columns determines how many columns will feature in each row. If you want more than a single column, set the number of columns here.

#Intro - the number of articles whose Intro text will be displayed (excludes the number of items in the Leading parameter).

#Links - the number of links to articles to display (excludes the number of items in the Leading and Intro parameters). Items showed in the Links section will feature just the title of the article (with no Intro text displayed).

Joomla 1.5 - Changing the Title (Welcome to the FrontPage)

The following article shows how to change the article title in Joomla 1.5

Hi mate, thanks for the help. I'm still amazed at how flexible Joomla is.
Although I'd prefer non-tabled layouts. 1.5 Should be great!

It's so simple, it hurts.
Thank you.
jude   |219.65.40.xxx |2007-11-28 08:10:38
in joomla 1.5 a two-column frontpage item sequence goes like this (to take one
example)

ist article(lead)

2nd 5th

3rd 6th

4th 7th

Is
there a fix to do row-pairs instead?

e.g.

2nd 3rd etc

Sephan  - help needed   |198.54.202.xxx |2008-03-05 11:29:30
I would like to change the title of the front page. It's currently what joomla's
default is "Welcome to the front page". I went to the home button, but
there's no title to change in the parameters on the side.

Thanks

Hey there.

I've got a couple of links from joomla front page to some articles
but when i want to look at each article it displays the article within the
mainbody of the front page, rather than showing the article on its own?

Is
this a built-in characteristic? or is it just my site? or is it just me? or am i
crazy?
Lou  - Home page annoying issue   |162.83.195.xxx |2008-03-20 17:29:34

I have just recently added a new article in Tips and Tricks section which
details exactly how to change this.

I also added a link to this article at
the bottom of the page.

Hope this helps

For some reason when I change page title and set to show my joomla looks like it
saves but it changes nothing. I still have "Home" on my frontpage. Any
tips why the Page Title is not saving or being acknowledged?

DART

where is the link to this solution I've looked everwhere and cant find
it?
DART  - Link   |SAdministrator |2008-09-23 11:03:18
This should be a link in one of your menus (usually the Home menu).
Lubna  - frontpage body module?   |62.117.53.xxx |2008-09-24 17:35:42
Hi, Id like to know wether its possible to display weblinks instead of articles
in the frontpage main body.

Thanks
DART  - Weblinks   |SAdministrator |2008-09-26 13:12:48
Yes you can. For J1.5 you just need to create a link to the weblinks component
and set is the Default link. For J1.0 you need to make sure that the first link
in the main menu is set to the weblinks component.
Sebi  - bad design     |88.151.43.xxx |2009-01-08 00:07:09
Thanks for the tip, however it's interesting that everyone wonders how stupid
they were and how 'easy' it was, when in fact this a clear case of bad
design.
You confirm it yourself:
"This simple question is asked over and
over again on the Joomla forums by newbies. "
If it's asked so much, maybe
the problem is with the system, not the user.
Just my 2c.
GreenMinds  - thank!     |121.97.108.xxx |2009-02-01 14:23:33
thanks a lot!
zubair  - Add Front Page Layout   |202.71.138.xxx |2009-02-05 09:51:27
Hi,

I am added a new Front Page Layout for a section, now how can i
customize it for the section.
DART  - Frontpage layout   |Administrator |2009-02-05 18:26:36
nOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN HERE...
Pius  - What happens if that doesn't work     |204.210.227.xxx |2009-02-05 21:21:30
So, I have re-set the columns to 1. I've even increased the 'leading' number to
5. Yet, Joomla still formats a second Front Page Article as if there were 2
columns. This is extremely frustrating as it makes the article far too narrow
to fit the text and graphic I want.
Pius  - Scratch that     |204.210.227.xxx |2009-02-05 21:23:22
Interestingly, the problem only arises in Firefox, not in IE. I suppose I can
live with that.
kill  - Nice   |189.75.234.xxx |2009-02-24 06:36:53
Thanks a lot.
jitendra  - how to get full width article top and bottom both   |59.98.220.xxx |2009-02-25 11:49:46

Thanks a lot
albert123  - still not happy..   |81.184.168.xxx |2009-03-25 07:17:17
Yes... but my problem is that I want to display a slideshow using the whole
with, and before all I tried it seems it is possible only in a module, not in a
content.. so my "Issue" is not solved as when set up to 1 colum and 0
for the rest items it definetly shows 1 colum but with the normal narrow size...

Anyone has any idea about how to solve this ??

Many thanks in advance..
Chan  - Can this be done?     |98.110.189.xxx |2009-03-26 12:46:03
Article 1 - Full Width (Row 1 - Leading)

Article 2 (Row 2, Column 1)

Article 4 (Row 3, Colum 1) Article 5 (Row 3,
Column 2)

Article 6 - Full Width ------

Article 7 - Full Width ----------
DART  - Custom layout   |Administrator |2009-03-26 13:34:41
Chan,

I doubt this can be done using the frontpage component. However, you
should be able to tweak your template to be able to come up with something
similar to that.

Alternatively ask at the Joomla forums, they might be able to
guide you better on this.
Joseph Smith   |62.241.238.xxx |2009-05-21 19:28:52
Gee, thanks, but what comes out when you click the menu doesn't look at all what
you have there...
