Joomla 1.0 vs Joomla 1.5

Now that Joomla 1.5 stable has been released, lots of people are wondering (or should wonder), what should I use, Joomla 1.0, or Joomla 1.5?

Personally, I think it is too early to go live with 1.5. Before most extensions have been changed to support 1.5 in native mode, (not in Legacy mode) I don't think I'll be upgrading. I'm sure I'd be able to if I wanted, I just don't feel like going through the hassle.

Basically, I'll be waiting a bit more. And when clients ask me whether to go for 1.0.x or 1.5, I'm still in a dilemma at what to suggest. If I were to be selfish, I could just recommend 1.0.x and then charge again for a migration a few months down the line, however I pride myself in helping people, rather than just taking their money. At the moment, if people want a Vanilla or mostly Vanilla CMS, I recommend 1.5. If they are very dependent on 3rd part components for most of the functionality, I'm still recommending 1.0.x.

There will be some small bugs in Joomla 1.5, however if there is a stable version out, that means most of them would not affect 90% of users.

The problems you are probably experiencing are not with Joomla itself, but with 3rd party plugins which are not yet compatible. Your decisions should be this. How many 3rd party components do you need for your site? If you need a lot, then go for Joomla 1.0.x, if your site does not need 3rd party components, go for 1.5

There are more available plugins for Joomla 1.0.x, since its been around for much longer. If I were you, I would install them both, and see which modules you like and test them on both, so you see if they work correctly.

Also, if you need a great looking site, take a look at the Free Joomla Templates article to the left, and browse to Professional Joomla Templates. Joomlart have great looking templates, and I strongly recommend you go for one of those.

Yes, if the module is strictly necessary for your site, then go with Joomla 1.0.x. This is what we recommend if you need lots of 3rd party functionality.
