Building Websites with Joomla 1.5

Building Websites with Joomla 1.5

{googleads left}Building Websites with Joomla 1.5 Joomla 1.5 has made an extraordinary leap in usability from Joomla 1.0. In our opinion, it is much easier to use than its predecessor. However, we all have backgrounds in web development and design, so that probably means we take certain things for granted. Lots of people (us included) sometimes just want to have a good book to introduce them and guide them when something is not so clear. And this is where we are suggesting the book Building Websites with Joomla! 1.5 .

Once again we have a book from Packt Publishing which is a good reference book for Joomla users. It starts with a good intro and terms and conventions used in the book and then covers most topics in the lifetime of developing a website using Joomla including:

  • Joomla 1.5 Features
  • Installation of Joomla in various environments (step by step instructions explaining each step)
  • Customizing Joomla languages and templates
  • Understanding the administration area
  • Customizing the various menus
  • Designing your site and creating your own Joomla templates
  • Other advanced topics like bringing and idea to fruitition or how to write your own extensions.

This book goes into detail, going down to describing what each choice does, and what the various options are. It gives example to make understanding things easier, and suggests ways and means to achieve what you need. A chapter which we particularly liked is Chapter 6 which explains in detail the most essential backend administration functions. The Content menu chapter also explains well the options for your content items in Joomla. The Components and Extensions chapter also explain well what each default Joomla component does, and then a number of 3rd party components are suggested which are a few must have Joomla components.

After explaing what is available, the book goes into how to create your own cool template, how to go about creating a template from scratch or how to customize an existing template. The last chapters contains ways and means of really pimping up your Joomla site to achieve the most of it.

In a nut shell, we recommend this book for people who want to get the most out of their Joomla 1.5 website!

The Professional's Guide to Programming Joomla!

Mastering Joomla 1.5 DevelopmentWith a lifelong interest in software development, and a significant career in software development in general, I found it quite easy to learn the syntax of a new language, and start being productive with a language which I'm not familiar with. However, having said that, the most difficult part of learning and getting to grips with a new language, is learning its API (Application Programming Interface). Each language, or framework has its own API which usually requires a good reference to enable you to be productive with the framework.

{googleads right} PHP and Joomla are no different. It was very easy for me to settle into PHP, having used a whole variety of web application scripting languages, including ASP, ASP.NET, JSP etc. Once you understand the concepts, its easy to switch from one language to the other.

The API is quite a different story. It takes time to get familiar with an API and usually a good book eases the transition to a new framework. Having written a few extensions in Joomla 1.0, the switch to Joomla 1.5 was another hurdle.

Mastering Joomla 1.5 Development

The book Mastering Joomla 1.5 - Extension Development by James Kennard published under Packt Publishing is a refreshing help. The book was a very excellent resource for me to get to grips with the Joomla 1.5 API. The book has been written with developer's like me in mind, i.e. people who have knowledge of general web application programming but little or no knowledge of Joomla. The way the book has been sectioned is excellent, starting with a brief intro to Joomla (for completeness' sake), a Joomla programming Getting Started chapter and then delves into the API per se. It introduces the general classes Joomla uses, and how they relate to each other. Each chapter then introduces and describes more enhanced  functionality, such as accessing the database, developing components, the MVC model, and keeps on building, with each chapter building and adding to the knowledge learned in the previous chapters.

Besides being a good all round development book , its an excellent reference. When you are stuck on something, just find the relevant chapter, read through the examples, and soon you'll have enough information to get yourself going. The Appendix also has a full API reference with all classes and methods, which once again is a golden nugget.

Overall I think this book is a great book for anyone delving into the Joomla Development world, and highly recommend this book.

Learning Joomla! 3 Extension Development - Third Edition

I've been working in Joomla industry for 7 years now, nearly as long as Joomla! has been around. I've always been interested in web development, and a significant career in software development in general, I orginally found it quite easy to learn the syntax of what was (then) a new language for me (PHP), and quickly got productive with a language which I was previously not very familiar with. However, having said that, the most difficult part of learning and getting to grips with a new language or a new system, is learning its API (Application Programming Interface). Each language and each  framework has its own API, different rules, different functions and different ways of wroking which usually requires a good reference to enable you to be productive with the framework.
