WordPress: insert promo content above the fold

 According to an eye-tracking study, web users spend 80% of their time looking at information above the fold. So it is very important that when posting on Wordpress you place your most important content above the fold where your readers pay more attention.

That said, now you may be asking, what does it mean by the ‘most important content’ in this context. How can you determine it for your website?

The answer depends on the purpose and goals of your website. It can be a promo, advertisement or even announcement. Here are a few content ideas.

  • Newsletter signup: Add an e-mail subscription form to encourage readers to signup.
  • Announcement: Are you about to launch a product? Then, how about spreading the word out by featuring the product launch above the fold.
  • Social media following: Entice your readers to follow you on social media by adding a follow button.

In this post, we’ll explain how to insert your most important content of your website above the fold on WordPress.

Insert content on top of the sidebar

This is the easiest way to add content above the fold. CopyBlogger has been using this strategy for years for building their email list.

Below you’ll find how to do the same on your WordPress blog.

Step 1: In WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance >> Widgets. Look for Text widget and add it to the top of your Widget Area.

Step 2: Add your content into the Text widget and click save.

That’s it. You’re done.

Insert content above the content area but below navigation

Adding content on top of the Wordpress sidebar is also an easy task. Sadly, for grabbing a reader's attention, the traditional position like the sidebar isn’t as effective as it used to be. When readers are busy looking for information they need, most of them tend to ignore sidebar content even if it is on the top because their focus will be around the content area - people have gotten used to the fact that the sidebar is lined with adverts.

So a good strategy is to place the content above the content area but below the navigation.

Let’s see how it can be done on WordPress.

If you are using a clean theme like default WordPress theme, say twenty fifteen, look for the lines of code given below in the template file where you would like to add the promo content (that is, index.php, pages.php or single.php).

All you need to do is to simply add your promo content just below the line.

<div id="primary" class="content-area">

<main id="main" class="site-main" role="main">

Note: Make sure you backup the content before making any changes on your live site.

However, if you are using an older theme like Twenty Fourteen, here’s what the lines of code will look like.

<div id="primary" class="content-area">

<div id="content" class="site-content" role="main">

insert promo content

You’ll need to insert your promo content, (e.g. newsletter signup box, facebook like box, etc.) just below the specified lines of code.
Finally, see how your website will look like once you added the content below navigation.
